A Brief History
Community theater has always been popular in the Highland area.
Several local towns have established theater groups - Clinton County
Showcase in Breese, Looking Glass Playhouse in Lebanon, and CATS in
Collinsville (among others) - but none based in Highland. Then, in
June 2001, three local community thespians decided that the time had
come for Highland to have its own community theater group. In a matter
of days, the first production was selected (Steel Magnolias), a theater
facility was reserved (Highland Upper Elementary Auditorium) and a board
of directors was established.
Local businesses and individuals were contacted for support - and the
response was nothing short of amazing. The first HRTP casting call went
out and the response was overwhelming. Obviously, Highland was ready
for community theater.
In the span of three months, we scrambled to prepare our first show.
Then on September 12, 2001 the curtain rose on Steel Magnolias.
Community theater had arrived in Highland!
